The Good Bye Sundsvall FLY-IN will take place on VATSIM Sunday November 21st from 1800Z to 2200Z. Sundsvall Control and several airports will be staffed (which ones depending on traffic).

Which positions will be opened depends on the amount of traffic to each airport and the number of available controllers. As a minimum ESUN_V_CTR plus one position (TWR or APP) at two different airports will be online during the event.

 

AFIS/Uncontrolled Airports

 

The following airports only have AFIS (Aerodrome Flight Information Service) in real life: ESND, ESNG, ESNK, ESNL, ESNO, ESNV, ESUD, ESUP, and ESUT. If you are flying to or from one of these airports and no AFIS position is online, it will be

handled as an uncontrolled airport by ESUN_V_CTR and you can expect to take off and land at own discretion. However, contact ESUN_V_CTR before departure to obtain departure clearance.

 

Airport Information

 

A brief description of some of the airports in Norrland. For detailed description check the AIP/charts in the link provided above.

 

Sundsvall-Härnösand (ESNN)

Many daily flights to Stockholm/Arlanda (SAS) and a few to Göteborg/Landvetter (Skyways).

 

Umeå (ESNU)

Scheduled flights to both Stockholm/Arlanda (SAS and Flynordic) and Bromma (Malmö Aviation).

 

Skellefteå (ESNS)

Both SAS and Skyways provide several flights a day to Stockholm/Arlanda.

 

Luleå/Kallax (ESPA)

One of three remaining air bases in Sweden. The F 21 air force wing has both Viggen and Gripen fighters. Also a busy civilian airport with many daily scheduled flights to Stockholm/Arlanda (with SAS and Flynordic), as well as routes to Göteborg/Landvetter, Östersund, Pajala, and Kiruna. Kallax also has some international scheduled traffic: to Tromsö in Norway (via Kiruna), and to Arkhangelsk in Russia, via Rovaniemi in Finland, and Murmansk. Lots of military charter flights as well.

 

Kiruna (ESNQ)

The northernmost airport in Sweden has scheduled traffic to Stockholm/Arlanda a few times daily (with SAS), and connections to Luleå and Tromsö in Norway. Sweden's highest peak, Kebnekaise, is not far away.

 

Östersund/Frösön (ESPC)

Another air base. Traffic similar to Kallax, with several daily flights to Stockholm/Arlanda (SAS) plus military charters. Scheduled flights also to Luleå via Umeå.

 

Arvidsjaur (ESNX)

In the winter season, frequent visitors to this airport are business jets from the automotive industry, which have winter test facilities in the area. The flights include six charter flights from Germany each week (mainly with LTU). The airport is also

the home base of a major flight school which has 14 Cessnas, often in the air all at the same time! Connected to Stockholm/Arlanda with three flights each day (by Skyways, going via Lycksele).

 

Pajala (ESUP)

A tiny airport with two daily flights to Luleå.

 

Hemavan (ESUT)

Flying here can be quite interesting, as the area is rather mountaneous, at least for Sweden! Daily service to Stockholm/Arlanda with Swedline. A scenic area for VFR flights.

 

Vidsel (ESPE)

A military airfield which is the base for RFN - Robotförsöksplats Norrland (Missile Test Range Norrland). Home to a few Gripen fighters for missile testing, and Lansens for target towing. The Eurofighter is being tested in arctic climates here.
