A flightplan in reallife, some questions...

The last flight on one of the SAS videos is AMS-OSL in a -700. Due to noise restrictions in Danmark, the flight was rerouted via Stavanger. The video shows how the flightplan is keyed into the FMC.

Any of you know the meaning of:

  • (SUPUR)... round brackets around wpt
  • +GODOS.... the + sign
  • -(CUTEL).. the - sign

Now the F/O is keying the flightplan into the FMC. Notice that when there is a single leg on an airway, he uses DIRECT in stead of keying the airway.

It seems not significant: your opinion??

Also notice he leaves UP5 at ZOL for direct to SOTIR.

I expect the expertise present under VATSIM pilots (I'm not one myself).

While the route may partially be due to noice restrictions, these restrictions are unlikely to be imposed by Danish authorities. We are more likely talking about restrictions out of AMS, or routing restrictions overhead Denmark.

Leaving out the Airway name is not really significant if you only travel between two waypoints on the airway. The significance of keying in the airway name is that the FMC knows what way-points to find along a given airway, while using the "direct" method means that the pilots may get a list of "possible correct way-points" if there are more way-points available with the same name/code. The workload of selecting the correct way-point as opposed to inserting the airway name would be approximately equal I suspect.

According to the flight plan, after ZOL it is UP600 to SOTIR. A "direct" here seems perfectly reasonable. However, why they did not insert SIG after SOTIR I do not know...

If I remember correctly, there was indeed routing restrictions. The aircraft were handed off to Scottish after Amsterdam (very early!), and thereby never were in contact with Copenhagen Control.

Takk, Gunnar & Werner

Noise: it was told in the video it was due to Danish noise restrictions. SK822 is a morning flight leaving AMS at 10:20 at the time of recording. Indeed Scottish ATC was in charge above North Sea. Incoming flight SK821 used normal route.

Using direct in stead of airway: it happened as Gunnar described: worldwide search for waypoint, F/O has to select the right one: upper one is closest.

The flightplan says: up5 SOLA up600 SOTIR uz16 SIG.

My point: ZOL is not mentioned, but entered in the FMC.

Btw, no SIG after SOTIR: it wasn't finished yet on the last screenshot.

Yeah, the noise when two aircrafts collide is rather uncomfortable.

I think I'll have to watch the movie again soon. One can learn a bit from watching these :)

ZOL= Sola VOR

OK, but that means the flightplan requires interpretation. (Ahum!)

It's quite interesting how ATC interacts, especially with AMS being rather a busy airport compared with OSL. They get a lot of ATC directions, even halfway the flight.

No-one knows about the notations in the flightplan?
