Marius Fredriksen Skrevet 11. desember 2009 Forfatter Skrevet 11. desember 2009 Mohammad Al Mehairi & Jean Marc Sanchez Dubai (UAE): The Victory Team is in mourning following the loss of popular pilots Mohammad Al Mehairi and Jean Marc Sanchez. Officials of the UIM and WPPA announced the tragic deaths of Al Mehairi (34) from the UAE and Sanchez of France (48) following a racing accident today (Dec 11) during race one of the Dubai Grand Prix, the final round of the Class 1 World Powerboat Championship. The two pilots, the current European Champions and representing the Dubai Victory Team in Victory 1, were involved in a high-speed crash during the early stages of the race at the Dubai International Marine Club. The race was subsequently red flagged. Safety personnel attended to both pilots at the scene. They were subsequently airlifted to a local hospital, where all efforts to resuscitate them were in vain. The Victory Team, UIM, WPPA, IOTA and DIMC pass on their deepest condolences to the families of both pilots. As a mark of respect, event organisers have cancelled all remaining activities for tomorrow (December 12). In 2007 Jean-Marc became the first Frenchman to win the Class 1 World and European Championships - he repeated the feat of winning the European title with Mohammad Al Mehairi this year and was holding second in the World Championship. Jean Marc - affectionately known to all as "Frenchy" - started racing in Class 1 in 1984 with Didier Pironi’s Leader outfit, making his competitive Class 1 debut in 1987 alongside Pironi in Collibri. In 1989 he joined forces with Italian Team Rainbow and in 1991 transferred to Achilles Motors. He joined Victory Team in 1993 as a mechanic, becoming Crew Chief for Khalfan Harib and Ed Colyer in 1994, later taking over duties as the team’s test driver. He made an impressive return to racing in 2004, taking five podium finishes and third overall in the title race with Mohammed Al Marri and the following year lifted the Middle East title and finished runner-up in the world title race – a feat he repeated in 2006. Jean-Marc won ten Grands Prix from 47 starts and was in the top ten of Class 1 pilots of all time. Mohammad Al Mehairi was in his first season as a Victory Team Class 1 pilot but was no newcomer to the world of boat racing. His experience as a wooden powerboat racer - a sport in which he was UAE national champion on several occasions - saw him take to Class 1 in style, winning twice in his first eight races on the circuit and lifting the European Championship in his first season in C1. The Victory Team and their families ask their fans, friends and supporters for privacy at this time. Nyheter fra http://www.victoryteam.ae Siter
