"Canada calls on Air Transat to take more security steps MONTREAL, Aug 30 (AFP) - Canadian transport officials Thursday ordered Air Transat to implement additional security measures in the wake of last week's fuel leak on an Airbus A330 that forced an emergency landing in the Azores. Transportation officials said Air Transat will be required to provide special training for personnel on long-haul flights to deal with fuel problems. The airline will also modify its transatlantic flights so that planes are never more than one hour from an airport. "These are simply preventive measures to avoid another incident of this type," said a spokesman for Transport Minister Peter Coyles. "We are not in any way prejudging the cause of the accident," the spokesman said. A Canadian pilot last Friday managed to land the powerless jet on Portugal's Azores island of Terceira. What might have turned into a disaster resulted in only 58 minor injuries among some 300 people on board. Preliminary findings of the Portuguese transport ministry probe into the incident last week found that the charter plane developed a fuel leak on a flight from Canada to Lisbon. Both the jet's engines cut out when it was 9,600 metres (32,000 feet) above the Atlantic and it glided 100 nautical miles (185 kilometers) before the landing. The experts said that a preliminary inspection of the plane's engines showed that a fuel pipeline to the right engine was broken, according to the Portuguese news agency Lusa. Aviation experts from Portugal, Canada and France were continuing their investigation of other components of the aircraft and all aspects of the flight. (AFP)
