“It would appear that the plane was grossly overweight,” says Silbert Mills, owner of Radio Abaco, and mayor of the Central Abaco district, which includes Marsh Harbour. The definitive cause of the crash won’t be determined until the wreckage is brought to the United States for further investigation. But Mills, himself a pilot with 9,000 air miles, says the facts show that weight was definitely a factor. Over 500 pounds of luggage was on the plane, which would lend credence to the reports that there was an argument about the plane’s weight preceding its takeoff.

With 9 passengers on the plane, each would have had to weigh 89 pounds to make the correct flying weight as established by the manufacturer, says Mills. “Even a hundred pounds over would make a difference,” Mills says. “That and pilot experience.”
